The only direct flight, Sky Express at roughly 45 minutes in the air, runs about twice a day in peak season and often costs the same or more once you add check-in and transfers at both ends.
Bottom line: the flight looks twice as fast, but door to door it saves closer to one hour, and the ferry gives you three to four times more departures to pick from. Fly only if a direct summer slot fits your plans or you are connecting onward by air. Otherwise, book the boat.

How long does the Mykonos to Santorini ferry take?
The fastest boat covers the crossing in 2 hours 10 minutes; slower high-speed services take up to about 3.5 hours. SeaJets runs the quickest vessel at 2h10m, while Golden Star's high-speed boats take around 2h50m. Both leave from the New Port at Tourlos, not the Old Port in town, and dock at Athinios, Santorini's main ferry harbour about 25 minutes below Fira by road. How much does the ferry cost, and can you bring a car?
Budget €90 to €110 for a standard economy seat and €150 or more for business or VIP, checked August 2026. Fares climb toward mid-August and ease in the shoulder months of April, May and October.
Many of these boats carry cars, but vehicle space is limited and sells out before passenger seats, so reserve the car deck early if you're island-hopping with a rental. Is there a direct flight from Mykonos to Santorini?
Yes, but only in summer and only a few times a day. Sky Express flies the direct hop from Mykonos (JMK) to Santorini (JTR) in about 45 to 52 minutes, roughly two flights a day at peak, around 16 a week. One-way fares in August 2026 ran €102 to €177, with occasional lows near €50 to €70 surfacing on comparison sites such as Skyscanner. Outside the summer schedule there is usually no direct flight: you connect through Athens, which turns a quick hop into a half-day with two departures and a layover.
Is it actually faster to fly?
On paper the flight is a 45-minute win against a 2.5-hour ferry. Start to finish, the real gap is closer to one hour. A direct flight quietly costs you the extras: about 10 minutes to the airport, 60 to 90 minutes for check-in, security and boarding, the 45-minute flight, then roughly 25 minutes from Santorini's airport up to Fira or Oia. That is 2.5 to 3 hours all in, twice a day.
The ferry adds up differently: about 15 minutes to Tourlos, a 30-minute check-in, the crossing of 2h10m to 2h50m, then about 25 minutes from Athinios. Call it 3.25 to 4 hours, but with six to eight sailings a day. You trade roughly one hour for far more flexibility.

Which should you choose, ferry or flight?
Choose the ferry when you travel between March and November, want the widest choice of departure times, are watching the budget in peak season, or you're bringing a car. Choose the flight when it's peak summer, a direct Sky Express slot fits your schedule, and the one-hour door-to-door saving matters, or you're connecting straight onward by air from either airport. In winter, from December to February, neither runs direct: no dependable direct ferry and no direct flight, so you route through Athens by air.
When do the ferries and flights run?
