Getting to the airport — the step people underestimate
The ride to JMK is the most failure-prone part of departure day. Returning a rental car? Refuel before the airport (agency fuel rates are higher) and add 10–15 minutes for the inspection and key handover.
Check-in, security and the 100ml rule
Inside, the process is compact: 16 check-in counters (desks open per flight, typically 2–3 hours before departure), then 5 security lanes. Two things to know in 2026. First, the 100ml liquids limit still applies in Greece — some EU airports with new CT scanners have scrapped it, but Athens expects its scanners around 2027 and Mykonos later, so pack liquids the old way. Second, the lanes are the terminal's bottleneck: when several departures board at once in the August waves, the queue grows fast — which is why the 2–3 hour advice is not padding.
Bags, online check-in and the charter caveat
Online check-in works at JMK, but it rarely saves the desk visit. Travelling with hold luggage? You queue for bag drop at the same counters. Flying a charter or a non-Schengen route? Most carriers require a document check at the desk regardless of your boarding pass. The practical rule: treat online check-in as seat selection, not as permission to arrive late. Counters typically open 2–3 hours before departure and close strictly — usually 40–60 minutes before the flight, and a closed counter at a small island airport means a missed flight, because there is no later desk to run to.

Passport control when leaving Greece
If your flight goes outside the Schengen Area (a UK charter, for example), you clear exit passport control at JMK — and the EU's biometric EES registers exits as well as entries, so allow a few extra minutes at the booth. Once you are airside
Past security the options are pleasant but finite: cafés, a compact duty-free (with the Reserve & Collect pre-order service), a few boutiques — and since 2026 two lounges: Goldair's Mykonian-style lounge at domestic departures (seasonal, 1 May–15 October) and the Delos VIP lounge with fast-track boarding. If the flight is delayed or cancelled
Evening departures carry the highest delay risk (rotation maths), and Greek ATC strikes occasionally ground whole days.
